Our Story

The Architecture Foundation of British Columbia (AFBC) was created in 2001 as a registered charitable organization dedicated to promoting the profession of architecture in British Columbia.

AFBC’s goal is to provide academic scholarships, awards and grants for architectural education and research, and to contribute to local communities while showcasing architectural excellence in B.C.

These initiatives can only be made possible through donations or sponsorship of special events, such as AFBC’s 100 Mile House design competition.

100 Mile House – An Open Ideas Competition

AFBC has launched the 100 Mile House Design Competition which will be a major feature at Vancouver’s IDS West design show from September 27 – 29, 2012.

As part of showcasing sustainable design practices in British Columbia, entrants are to design a dwelling structure for a family of four, using largely materials and systems sourced within a 100 mile radius of the city of Vancouver.  It is the intent of AFBC to raise funds to build a prototype of the winning entry, and to gift this home to a family in need through Habitat for Humanity’s Vancouver Chapter.

“ I invite you to become a partner with the AFBC in this exciting exploration of ideas.  This is a unique opportunity for organizations who play a key role in promoting and expanding BC’s sustainable economy.  Together we can lead the way to a new, sustainable level with a community challenge.”
